Internal auditors in the United States and Canada who have earned their Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) are cashing in, says a recent compensation study conducted by Harrington & Associates Inc. on behalf of The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and its Global Audit Information Network (GAIN). The survey, conducted with more than 1,200 companies this past May, found that CIAs at the staff auditor level earn approximately $7,800 more than someone without an internal audit certification. In fact, all of The IIA's certifications pay dividends. The median salary for staff auditors holding the Certified Financial Services Auditor (CFSA) is US $76,438. Staff internal auditors working as a Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) are making an average of $77,875. And those staff auditors holding a Certification in Control Self-Assessment (CCSA) are making $77,938, on average. In contrast, internal audit practitioners working without any certifications earn an average salary of $50,460. The study also found that internal auditors on average will continue to receive raises over the next year, despite a looming recession. To learn more about certification, visit www.theiia.org/certification.
